What is a mole? The equation 6.022 x 10 23rd represents the amount of pure substance containing the same number of chemical units as there are atoms. For example, 12 grams of carbon = 12.
However, chemistry students (and teachers) mostly refer to October 23 at 6:02 AM as mole day, a day reserved to dress up and show your mole spirit! They come in mole shirts, towing mole posters and various treats. Not to mention an opportunity for extra credit!
That’s a lot less confusing huh?
Students love mole day because it’s a day when they can get up and be a science nerd and eat yummy treats at the early hours of the day! Students in other sciences may think chemistry srudents are a little too enthusiatic about mole day but, as the song states :
” You don’t have to be a geek or some kind of nerd to know about it! It’s no mysery, just a little chemistry!”
Chemistry teachers love mole day because it gives them a chance to share a moment of mutual enthusiasm with their students. But the food isn’t a bad deal either!
Chemistry teacher, Miss Cook, especially loves mole day! Want to know why? It’s her birthday! What a perfect day to celebrate for a chemistry teacher! Happy Birthday Miss Cook!
And a Happy Mole Day to you!
