It seems that Christmas is no longer just a day in December, but also a much anticipated event that begins very early on as stores began selling trees, ornaments, other holiday decorations in November. The neighbors even partake in this seemingly premature Christmas spirit, as they put up Christmas lights the day after Thanksgiving. Is this a case of extreme holiday cheer, or are stores exploiting this beautiful holiday? By putting up Christmas decors early on, stores are guaranteed a big profit by expanding the time frame that their merchandise is up, or otherwise, making a hefty revenue off of the holidays.
But aside from buying presents and decorations, early Christmas hype rings in the seasonal excitement earlier, leaving a lasting enthusiasm from Halloween, from knowing the cozy holidays are so close again. Just seeing the bright lights on in the descending darkness at around 6 PM now, gives me an energy boost for unknown reasons, except pure childish joy. The early lights also bright up the neighborhoods, bringing the community together to go light-watching and even creating a little neighborly competition to see which house is the best on the street.
Besides, when Christmas decorations go up, sales also start happening. Taking out the kids for some family shopping is a great bonding experience, not to mention you’re going to actually use the things you’re buying, for a great price.
I think early Christmas cheer is a great thing. It brings back our child-like anticipation and enthusiasm, and not to mention, we get to go selfless shopping for others! And if you can’t seem to restrain yourself from the enticing holiday decorations, then now you know what your New Year’s resolutions are.
Happy Holidays!
