The Spartans led, 1-3, during the first quarter, but the Barons were not so easy to beat. Kayla Robert (’12) and Kayla Robert (’12) also had 5 steals each to edge Villa Park during the third quarter. They outscored the Spartans to tie the game, 9-9, at the end of the third quarter.
Jennifer Lightbody (’12) and Rachel Christiansen (’13) combined for 9 goals and goalie Sandy Niemczyk (’14) made 12 saves, but the Spartans held off the visiting Barons, 12-13.
However, Villa Park netted a goal at the end of the fourth quarter to seal the game to improve the Spartans to (7-4-0) and the Barons move down to (9-6-0) for their season. Despite this loss, Fountain Valley is a top contender in the Sunset League and CIF-SS Division 1.
They will play the Newport Harbor Sailors (3-0-0), who are ranked No.2 in CIF-SS, when they come back from break on Wednesday, January 4th at Newport Harbor High School @6:05PM. Good luck ladies!
