The Barons boys varsity soccer team matched up against a struggling Edison that has gone 0-2 so far in league. The slow start was not at all expected of the Chargers who came into the league ranked 3rd in the county. The Barons were ridding a two game winning streak and were set to go 3-0 in the Sunset League.
The Barons played a very well game, although the chargers held the Barons off the score sheet for the majority of the game. The boys matched Edison’s intensity and built upon it with their own edge and won 50/50 balls all over the field.
Coach Jason Smith commented on the start for the Barons, “This is the best first half they have played all year.”
The Barons had many chances on goal coming off breakaways, corners, and crosses; the Edison goalie proved himself and made a couple spectacular saves. In the Second half the game was even tighter. The Barons and Chargers traded chance after chance. Finally with less than 15 minutes to go Joseph Solimon (’13) dribbled the ball down the line and cut into the box passing to Chargers on the way and played a line drive across the 6-yard box that an Edison player tapped in his own goal.
Solimon “Tebowed” as a celebration and the Barons were on their way to a 1-0 victory, after the Barons pulled into a overtly defensive posture the boys fought through head injuries and the Edison offense to keep the game at 1-0. After some desperation by the Chargers Fountain Valley fended them off the rest of the way and won 1-0 to stay atop the Sunset league, and send Edison home a defeated team with a league record of 0-3.
The Barons play against a strong 2nd place Marina team this Friday, the next two games of the first half of season will be monumental and if the Barons can stay undefeated a Sunset League title will be on the horizon.
