Attention all Sophomore Students – March 13th and 14th are the test days for the CA High School Exit Exam. Please mark your calendar and plan to be prepared to do your “Baron Best” on both days. Every sophomore student is scheduled to take the exam. We also have a few Juniors that have not completed the requirement and will participate in the testing process. These students will be personally notified by the school counselor. To proctor the exam, the school staff will use a variety of facilities to test over 900 students. You will be notified by your teacher or school counselor if you will be taking the exams in the library, Faculty Dining Room or in your third period classroom. The majority of our students will test in either the cafeteria or Gymnasium, determined by an alpha format. The Alpha list will be posted prior to testing so stay tuned for more CAHSEE details and announcements – Mr. Kennedy

The college application season starts now… And space is filling up fast for FVHS’s SAT Prep Class that starts Saturday, March 10th… Remember, the class is free and is guaranteed to raise your score significantly! Mr. Arnold will be going around to all English classes this week to promote sign-ups… and if you’re interested, remember to tear off the bottom of the SAT flyer that was passed out in your class and return it to Ms. Wakeman in the College & Career Center by next Wednesday, March 7th. Congratulations to Dean O’bourke, who is ranked 4th in State for becoming a Master’s Champion! He is the first one in 25 years…Also, congratulations to Steele Escobedo for placing 5th as a Junior. Both qualify for the State meet held this coming weekend in Bakersfield. Good Luck!
Fountain Valley High School’s newspaper, Baron Banner, competed this weekend in an Orange County Journalism Write-Off. The Baron Banner placed 2nd overall thanks to the talent of Noushin Ahdoot who placed 1st in Editorial, Andrea Liu who placed 1st in Feature, and Rosie Toumanian who took first in Critical Review. Tyler Ratzlaff, Jennah Pendleton, Adrien Ha, Julia Hong, Angelica Yaghoubi, Selena Yaghoubi and Meagan Faller all placed in their categories boosting Baron Banner to 2nd place in Orange County. Congratulations to our Baron Journalists!
Yesterday 13 High school dance teams were here on our campus competing in the USA regional dance competition. It was a proud day for our team!! We Placed 2nd in the jazz, lyrical and coed categories. Large, small hiphop , and officers placed 1st!! In the solo category Nicole Hiroi and Alyssa Loeffelman made it into the top 8 out of 23 Dancers. They both competed at the end of the day and Nicole received 1st place and Alyssa placed 2nd!!! An amazing day!!
FHA students competed at the Regional Competitive Recognition Events last Saturday at EL Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills. We would like to congratulate the following students who competed: Jessica Pappas place 4th in Fashion Design. Kayla Shirkhanbaighi placed 2nd in Cake Display. Angela Don placed first in Cake Display and Kathy Bui placed First in Salad Preparation. They will all move on to the State Competition to be held in Fresno in April. Congratulations!
A very special congratulations to the FVHS Pep Squad who competed at the U.S. Spiritleader National competition yesterday. The varsity cheerleaders placed 5th in the nation and the varsity songleaders placed 2nd in the nation. Both teams qualified for the Best of the West competition in 2 weeks. Great job…way to go ladies!

Congratulations to the Varsity wrestling team. They placed 4th in the CIF individual’s tournament this past weekend. 4th is the the highest placing in 2 decades. Three wrestlers advance to the Masters meet this weekend. They include: Edgar De La Torre who placed 3rd. Dean O’bourke who became a 4x CIF champion! and Steele Escobedo who is now a CIF Champ! Congrats to these wrestlers. If they place top nine this week, they will move onto State held in Bakersfield. Go Barons!

Paige has only been with us a semester, but her improvement in attitude and performance is definitely worth recognizing. Nominating teacher Emily Barro and Nancy Peterson attended the Rotary recognition breakfast this morning. Congratulations to Paige, and keep up the good work!
Congratulations to the Boys Varsity soccer team for defeating Santa Margarita 4-3 in penalty kicks. Ethan Morrow, Joseph Soliman, and Spenser Brose each scored for the Barons. Joseph Loranger came up big in the penalty kick shoot out with two huge saves. Travis Allison finished off the Eagles with the game winning goal. The Barons play at San Clemente tomorrow at 3:00. Hey Barons, many of our Winter Sport teams have qualified for CIF… today our Boys Soccer takes on Santa Margarita, here at F.V. in the back Soccer Stadium @ 3:00pm. Boys Basketball will travel Friday night to Upland and Girls Basketball will play at Burbank on Saturday night. Student Pre-Sale tickets are $5.00. Listen up Loud Crowd and all Baron students…. we are planning on having a “FREE” rooter bus for both Boys and Girls Basketball games. You must purchase your pre-sale ticket and sign up for the bus by Thursday at 3:00pm. We MUST have at least 40 students signed up by then to ride the bus or we won’t be having one.

Congratulations to Boys Basketball… the Sophomore and JV teams are Sunset League Champions. The JV team finished 22 – 3 on the season and were 9 – 1 in league. The Varsity team finished in 2nd place with their 52-38 win over Newport Harbor last night. Congratulations to the FVHS Academic Decathlon team on winning fourth place in its division at the recent Orange County Academic Decathlon competition. The team was led by captains Pauline Huynh, who won a fifth place overall individual medal and four other subject area medals, and Rosie Toumanian, who earned four individual medals. Peter Bui also earned four individual medals, and Salsabil Gehan won three medals. Adrien Ha, Mariyam Habeeb, and Anthony Yaghoubi all earned individual medals, as well. Great job, Academic Decathlon team!

Junior Jamie Dang returned a wallet with money it last week, and Freshman Juan Wright found somebody’s jacket lying around The Bowl. Sophomore Colin Herman stumbled upon a backpack that he turned into Supervision on Wednesday, and Senior Eric Shearer gave somebody back their glasses.
These students, along with many other Barons make a great Valentine’s companion in light of their recent good deeds. So when deciding on a sweetheart next week, make sure they’re nice, make sure their funny, and make sure that at least once in their lives, they were CAUGHT… BEING GOOD!!!

The Lady Barons basketball team takes on Newport Harbor tomorrow night at home. The frosh/soph team plays at 4:00, JV team at 5:30 and the Varsity game is at 7:00 pm. This is a very special game for our Lady Barons. Another victory for the dance team this past weekend at the USA regional competition. The large and small hip hop teams both received 1st place!! The jazz team placed 2nd, lyrical 3rd and officers 4th. All of these teams scored high enough to qualify for the national USA dance competition in March.

The Theatre Department will hold auditions for the spring musical “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Auditions will be held in the Faculty Lounge on February 7th and in room 310 on the 8th at 3:00. Congratulations to Zach Jones! Zach is one of only 27 Orange County Seniors who were nominated for the 2012 US Presidential Scholars Program for their perfect or near perfect SAT or ACT score. Zach is one of 3, 060 named nationwide for the elite recognition. This academic recognition is bestowed on about one-tenth of 1 percent of seniors nationwide. Congratulations Zach on this outstanding nomination!
Congratulations to the Wrestling team for winning the League title at ALL levels including Freshman, JV, and Varsity…The Sunset League tournament will be held at Huntington Beach high school tomorrow and the outlook for the varsity team looks good with 11 wrestlers being seeded high in the tournament. Let’s wish them luck as they head into the post season! Go Barons!
Congratulations to Girls’ Varsity Soccer for extending their unbeaten streak to 3 games by beating Marina High School yesterday 1-0!
The Barons freshman forward, Kasey Reeve, scored on a breakaway in the first half off an assist by junior, Maddy Gomez, to go up by one goal. They maintained their lead for the rest of the match behind a solid defensive performance by the entire Fountain Valley defense. Goalkeeper, Alison Marlow, records her first shutout of the season in league play. The Lady Barons next match will be next Tuesday @ Los Alamitos High School.
Congratulations!! Boys Basketball completes a season sweep by beating Edison 53-51 on Wednesday. Let’s pack the gym tonight for senior night and our final home game of the year.

The Fountain Valley Theatre Department kicks off the new semester with a comedy about love on a winter night in Maine. The play is just in time for Valentine’s Day. Come see Almost, Maine, playing in the theatre room 309 with shows at 3:00 and 7:00 today and tomorrow.
