Fountain Valley Sinks Huntington Beach in Showdown
After a humiliating defeat at both the boys and girls level to Div. 2 contender, Long Beach Wilson, it sparked the Barons to sweep the Oilers in their first league meet of the season. The boys won first in almost every event to bring Huntington Beach down, 93-70. Although the girls were without OC standouts, Jaime Dang (’13) and Taylor Johnson (’12), they dominated the Oilers, 108-61.
Our boys started off the meet by taking 1st in the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:48:52 and the B relay got edged by a almost less than a second and got 3rd. In the 200-yard individual medley, Alex Kryger (’12) touched 1st followed by Alex Nguyen (’12)and Cameron Curtiss (’13) in 3rd and 4th respectively to rack up 11 points. Halfway through the meet, the boys A relay captured a lettering time in the 200-yard free relay. Cory Nguyen (’13) out-touched Oiler, Kevin Francis (’14) by almost a second to win the 100-yard back. The boys sealed the victory with a 1st and 3rd place finish in the 400-free relay.
On the girls side, the girls made their impression by taking 1st in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:00:39 even without their top swimmers. Jennifer Schulman (’13) led the 200-yard freestyle from the sidelines in Lane 1 with a time of 2:02:43 to help lead the Barons. She also narrowly defeated Huntington in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26:21. The girls 200-yard free relay kept a distanced lead throughout the event. Sonia Djafri (’13) took the 500-yard free with a lap and a half lead. Katelyn Farrow (’14) captured both individual events in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 yard breast. Merri Lightbody outdistanced the Oilers with a 1:03:53 in the 100-yard back.
Next Tuesday, they face off against the Edison Chargers, whose boys are ranked No. 5 and girls are ranked No.4 in OC. The meet will take place at Edison High School at 3PM.
