Released onTuesday, May 1, Carrie Underwood’s latest album soared to the number one spot on the iTunes charts, and marks her fourth stellar release. Containing songs which portray complex feelings and emotions that can only be shared through music, it definitely shows personal and professional development. The first track on the album was pre-released as a single to entice listeners. Entitled “Good Girl,” it harkens to the more rock-driven aspects of Underwood’s music, as was previously heard in “Cowboy Casanova” and “Before He Cheats.” Telling the story of a girl who is involved with a guy who is “not good for [her],” the song narrates in classic country lyrics the woesome tale. “Good Girl” could definitely be considered one of the greater hits of the album. With an artist like Underwood, misses are few and far between, as was the case with this album. Almost all of the tracks feature creative lyrics to catchy rhythms that really attract the listener’s ear. “Blown Away,” the title track, has a pop-country feel. With a story similar to many other country hits like Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder and Steel,” Underwood laments the life of a girl who had been abused most of her adult life. Bearing a powerful message, it suggests that the girl simply leave every “tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away.”
Underwood’s senior album shows a mature artist who knows her style, and is able to capitalize on her strengths. One of the few successful American Idol victors, Underwood’s angelic voice penetrates the melody forming a fascinating sequence of songs. One could definitely classify Underwood as one of the most consistently powerful and impressive artists of this generation.
