After the exciting events of Episode 3, “The Revelation,” it seemed like Episode 4, “The Voice in the Night,” would feature a similarly thrilling storyline, if not an equally unexpected twist at the end. However, while Episode 4 is enjoyable in its own respect, it isn’t as electrifying as Episode 3.
In “The Voice in the Night,” the Fire Ferrets’ problem of coming up with 30,000 yuans for a place in the championship pot is solved by Hiroshi Sato, whose daughter, Asami, meets Mako and learns about the Fire Ferrets’ financial problem. Meeting Asami and having Hiroshi sponsor them in the championship pot lead to Mako being in a considerably better mood in this episode, which is a huge but nice change from his brooding attitude in the “The Revelation.”
Another side of Korra is also shown in “The Voice in the Night.” While the first three episodes mainly demonstrated her fierceness and recklessness, “The Voice in the Night” goes more in depth into Korra’s fear of Amon and his power to take someone’s bending away. These two contrasting sides of Korra make her character more realistic and relatable. Korra also displays surprising maturity at initially turning down Tarlock’s offer to join the task force in order to concentrate on learning air bending, but is also understandable because of her fear.
Amon’s somewhat surprise attack at the end clearly demonstrates how much more powerful he is than Korra currently, and highlights just how much more Korra has to learn before she will be ready to face him at the end of the season.
