Residents believed the thundering was an earthquake, but after the windows stopped rattling they went outside to find a yellow vehicle upside down in their front yard. They reported that one man was taken to UCI Medical Center and that police were still looking for the other occupant. Channel 7 Eyewitness News reported that it was the driver who fled the scene.
At approximately 2:30 a.m. the vehicle lost control while traveling eastbound on Ellis, clipped a telephone pole and careened through a cinderblock wall, and landed on its roof next to the home.
Police closed down Ellis at Bushard Street as they investigated the accident.
Neighbors reported hearing news helicopters circle overhead as they gathered near the corner of Ellis and Tamarind Street in Fountain Valley to share their stories. One resident reported that she had received a call from a relative who was looking at video of the accident on the news. The resident came outside to check on her neighbors.
Police reported that no one else besides the occupants of the vehicle were involved in the accident.
