On Tuesday, September 4th, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team stepped out onto the courts at Los Caballeros Racquet Club for their first match of the year against Mater Dei. Filled with enthusiasm and eager to play, they spread out on the courts to warm up. Half an hour later, the Baron team captain Liz Pham (‘13) gathered her team to read off the line up for the match.
Throughout the tennis season, the team has matches against different schools. For each match, each school selects three singles players and three doubles teams. Each player/team plays every other player/team from the other school, for a total of eighteen total sets. Each set is played until six games, and the games are tallied from there. The individual games are then added and the totals for each school determine the match’s winner.
After three hours of grueling matches in the hot sun, the match finally concluded, with a score of 4-14. Although the Barons lost, they fought hard and completed a well-rounded first match.
Co-captain Andrea Tieu (‘13) says, “All of the girls played hard, and at the end of the day, we lost. But, we changed some things we had spent the summer working on, so all in all, I think we all can consider it a success.”
On Wednesday, the girls faced Laguna Hills, and played a close match losing 8-10. Then, on Thursday, the Barons played San Clemente High School, and lost 0-18.
Although Pham expected more from these matches, she says that, “We will keep working hard until we win. It’s all about the journey. We started with a very young team, and we will continue to improve until we reach the level we set for ourselves. In the end, none of us wants to let the team down.”
