The annual Tet Trung Thu Festival is a community event that celebrates the Vietnamese holiday known as the Moon Festival.
This year, it was held on September 30th from 10 AM until 9 PM at Garden Grove Park.
The Moon Festival became popular in the early Tang Dynasty era and has been continued throughout the years by the Chinese and Vietnamese alike. The holiday celebrates the brightest moon of the year. It is traditional to eat bean paste pastries called moon cakes while drinking tea and watching bright lanterns and dragon dances.
During the festival, children and families enjoyed making their own homemade lanterns to walk around the neighborhood with.
“I really like to help people. I got to meet a lot of new people who also share the same interests as me,” volunteer Lisa Nguyen (’15) stated.
VSA members volunteered by working the origami booth, keeping control of traffic, making balloons, and cleaning up.
Vivian Ha (’15) said, “Overall, this event was pretty fun for me, I got to meet people from different schools, reconnected with old ones, and I enjoyed working with the little kids! It was a fun experience! After our shifts ended, we all got balloons with lights in them, and the volunteers got to go up towards the stage, and let go the balloons to end the festival.”
