Rigorous NHS Application Tests Barons

National Honor Society is a nationwide high school program that recognizes outstanding students who have shown excellence in leadership, character, and service.

NHS offers members a chance to maximize their hours of community service by holding weekly events (and a set minimum of hours are actually a requirement).

At their high school graduation, National Honor Society members are able to qualify for numerous scholarships from colleges and universities and are given graduation decorations for their gowns dependent on their number of active years within the club.

Fountain Valley’s NHS has a rigorous application process designed for Barons grades 10 and up. The application itself consisted of four pages and parts with logged service hours from the past, leadership skills, other extracurricular activities outside of NHS, and finally a short essay portion on defining character and the meaning of ethics.

All this had to be typed into the application (no handwritten paperwork would be accepted), and signatures verifying volunteer hours and possible leadership accounts had to be included.

The application was redesigned two years ago to become more selective to future members.

Co-president Andrea Tieu (’13) stated, “Because NHS serves to recognize exemplifying high school students, the application targets academically driven but well-rounded students.”

Hopeful Barons of all grades turned in their applications to Ms. Zeigler, the club adviser last Friday.  How does it feel to go through that stack of applications and determine who is the best fit for NHS this year?

“I’m definitely looking forward to going through applications! Because the majority of the club graduated last year, I’m definitely looking forward to a fresh start with new members involved in diverse activities who equally deserve to be in the club. “, said Tieu (’13).
