Every year, World Geography students create masterpieces of art dedicated to one aspect of culture around the world.
The freshmen-only class was given two weeks to research and create a presentation of their aspect of culture. The presentation was supposed to contain pictures and the students were to use visual aids such as posters, booklets, or PowerPoint presentations.
Many students were surprised by what they learned. Kelton Do (’16), whose project topic was weddings, found it interesting that “in Italy, two newlyweds would break a vase and the number of shards is how long they would stay together.”
Since many people grow up with only one perspective of the world, hearing about other cultures is an eye-opening experience.
When asked about the difference between cultures around the world, Ruth Nguyen (’16), who chose to do her project on New Years traditions, answered, “Each of them had their own quirks that don’t make sense to us but do to them.”
