On Wednesday, October 23, Barons varsity field hockey played Edison High School and tied 1-1, in a thrilling game that went into overtime. It has been an annual tradition for Barons field hockey to always tie with historic rival Edison in official games, leading to ten intense minutes of overtime, with seven players (not including a goalie) on each side.
This year, the Barons-Chargers game at FV’s home field was no different.
At the start of the game, both teams faced off and gave it their all, making for a tight match as the ball traveled up and down the field with shots taken on both goals. However, at half time, the score remained a 0-0 tie.
Five minutes into the second half, senior Emily Brucelas scored on goal with an assist from sophomore Cara Troutman. However, Edison proved determined not to lose – a loss to the Barons would mean losing their second place holding in league – and within minutes, managed a goal past goalie, Ryann Callaghan (’15).
The game continued to the end of the second half, where overtime then began, with seven of the most aggressive and determined players playing the entire field for ten minutes in hopes of a goal. Unfortunately, neither side scored, and the game ended in a tie at 1-1.
After a 4-0 loss to Marina the following week, FV Barons have made play-offs, placing fourth in league, and will begin playing next week.
