Fountain Valley High School’s football team beat Marina 31-13 on Friday, November 2nd.
“Fountain Valley won one for J.D. Hinnant”, Coach John Shipp said, “We won it for him.”
Without the support of the team’s senior left tackle and co-captain, the Barons suffered a rough start in the first quarter and somehow couldn’t manage to take the ball all the way into the end zone. Shipp said junior Sam Bingham played very well in Hinnant’s spot, “but you can never really replace J.D.”
Fountain Valley quarterback Chris d’Entremont (’13) opened the scoring by completing a 65-yard pass to Ryan Finley (’15) with 1:36 remaining in the first quarter.
After a slow start to second quarter, kicker Huynen (’13) added an additional 3 points in the last 3 minutes before halftime to put the Barons in the lead 10-7.
Breaking the Baron momentum, the Vikings managed to score in the sixth minute of the third quarter on a tight 4-yard run. With eight seconds remaining in the quarter, d’Entremont found Jacob Church (’14) in the end zone to increase the lead to 17-7.
Steele Escobedo (’13) converted it into a 7-yard touchdown run with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter following a 43-yard punt return by Jason Baker (’13). Three minutes later, d’Entremont completed a 62-yard pass to Ryan Finley for another touchdown to increase the lead to 31-7.
Marina finished the scoring with a final touchdown, making the final score 31-13 in favor of the Barons.
This game was the last high school football game for all of the seniors. At the end of the game, friends and family waited with banners for their senior to walk across the field to come to them. Some teammates held up J.D.’s poster in honor of his accident.
The Barons finished their season with 1-4-0 in league and 4-6-0 overall.
