Last night in the FVHS gym, Varsity Barons Wrestling beat Newport Harbor, 63-12.
The first match of the night was sophomore Vincent O’ Leary who lasted for well over three rounds but ultimately came up short. The Barons fought back and marched ahead with victories by Daniel Galdemez (‘14), Blake Vazquez (‘16), Ryan Bloom (‘13), Andrew Morgan (‘15 ), Steele Escobedo (‘13), Nathan Bazan (‘13), Stone Escobedo (‘15), Devin Stewart (‘14), Lennon Gomez (‘13), and Bryant Vazquez (‘14). The Barons led the rest of match, keeping Newport Harbor well at bay.
Afterwards, varsity captain Steele Escobedo (‘13) commented, “We wrestled Newport tough and came out ready, it’s the best we’ve done in a duel this year.”
Perhaps it’s because the wrestlers were all pumped up and ready to go after Senior Night where the coaches introduced and commemorated the Seniors that have been working hard all pre-season. Those seniors include Ryan Bloom, Lennon Gomez, Niko Gianakakos, Trevor Poteet, Nick Franks, and Nathan Bazan. They stood alongside their parents and held flowers given by the wrestling crew.
Next up for our wrestling team is the annual Five Counties wrestling tournament hosted right here at Fountain Valley High School beginning Friday, January 18 (that’s why that day is on a reverse modified schedule). The tournament continues through Saturday and Sunday. Come out and support our boys!
