This past weekend, the annual wrestling tournament Five Counties Invitational took place in the Fountain Valley gym and cafeteria.

The Five Counties Invitational is one of the two biggest wrestling tournaments of the year. Fountain Valley High School hosted over 80 high schools.

On Friday, matches started at 10 a.m. and ended at 7 p.m., while on Saturday matches started at 9 a.m. and ended at 7:30 p.m.

Barons wrestling has been training and practicing to compete against wrestlers from all over California. Blake Vasquez (’14), Steele Escobedo (’13), Stone Escobedo (’15), and Andrew Morgan (’15) went strong, winning each of their matches.

On Saturday, Steele Escobedo won first place in his weight division. Crowds of people gathered around the match and sat on the benches as Escobedo wrestled his way to victory.

“It was great, we haven’t had a champion for a long time. So, it was good to have Steele Escobedo. He works hard so it was a great accomplishment for him,” said Fountain Valley coach Brad Woodbury.

Escobedo is the first Baron in 25 years to win first place in Five Counties.

“Fountain Valley wrestled great. We’re 11th out of 80 teams. We had three guys placed, Steele Escobedo won it, Stone Escobedo placed and Andrew Morgan placed,” said Woodbury.
