Wrestling Finals throw down

Schools like Fountain Valley, Marina, Huntington Beach, Edison, Los Alamitos and more participated in the wrestling finals in the gym this Saturday to decide who would be qualified to move onto CIF.

Individual wrestlers competed in matches; if they continually won, they would be able to move on to compete to be one of the final three. If they lost two of their matches they would not qualify for the final rounds.
“I feel good because we have 11 guys in the finals now for Varsity. Right now, I am undefeated and I’m in the finals as well but for JV. So far, I think we’re going to take first in this tournament,” said wrestler Jacob Diaz (‘14).

The Barons have broken the school record of having 11 wrestlers in the finals this year. The last time a record was broken here in Fountain Valley was in ’96 with 8 wrestlers in the finals.

“It’s great. We have six champs and twelve qualifiers,” said Coach Woodbury. “The guys wrestled their butts off. We won the League title individual so it was a good job on them.”

Varsity wrestlers going to CIF are:

Daniel Galdamez (‘14), Josh Madrid (‘13), Andrew Morgan (‘15), Steele Escobedo (‘13), Nathan Bazan (‘13), and Bryant Vazquez (‘14), who each won first place in their weight division.

Vincent Phan (‘15), David Galdamez (‘15), Blake Vazquez (‘15), Stone Escobedo (‘15), and Lennon Gomez (‘13), who won second in their weight divisions, are also going. Quentin Gomez (’15) also qualifies, bringing home third place for his weight division.

Varsity broke a record with 210.5 points.
