Last weekend, while many students enjoyed the extra day off with Lincoln’s birthday, Barons celebrated Chinese and Vietnamese New Year by attending the annual Tet Festival.
The festival is an annual tradition taken place on Bolsa Grande High School campus, sponsored and organized by UVSA, a form of VSA for colleges and universities.
Carnival games, college booths, and even a special appearance by well-known dance crew, Poreotics, all contributed to honoring the Vietnamese heritage as well as celebrating the Lunar New Year.
Some students attended to enjoy the festival with their friends and family. There were booths, food stands, and free entertainment such as musical performances and lion dancing.
Volunteer Vivian Ha (’15) said, “I had a really good experience volunteering…I would definitely do it again because it feels good to be helping out, and its always a good time meeting new people, as well as hanging out with friends from other schools there.”
FVHS’ Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) contributed to the Tet Festival with several members volunteering to direct traffic and run booths. Many chose to take more than one shift, and worked for hours at a time in the cold February weather.
Students from Edison High School, Marina High School and others within the Huntington Beach Union High School District also volunteered.
VSA president Kevin Hoang (’13) said, “Tet Festival was a great experience! The lion dancing was phenomenal, the varieties of food were exquisite, and the pageant was great!”
