Physics students went on a field trip at Knott’s Berry Farm for Physics Fun Day on Thursday, March 7th.
The field trip is hosted by Knott’s Berry Farm as a learning experience for all physics students. The park allowed in students from all over the states for two hours so they could do physics lab on the roller coaster rides. FVHS has been active in this event for 10 years.
“We had to fill out this packet that Knott’s Berry Farm gave out; it involved physic questions on the ride,” said Keven Reyes (’14). “We didn’t need to fill it all out, just about five questions.”
“To be successful first of all you need to know some physics – kinetic energy, potential energy and other various motion equations,” stated physics teacher Mr. Collins.
Equipment such as accelerometers, stop watches, and a device to measure declination were used to complete the labs. However, despite the schoolwork, students still had fun.
“I loved being able to learn about the science behind the rides we went on,” said Austin Jenkins (’14). “I could feel the numbers and formulas coursing through my veins as the adrenaline was released into my bloodstream when we surpassed the peak of the first hill, and the click-click-click of the ascent chain finally ceased.”
