FVHS’s California Scholarship Federation (CSF) hosted S(hair) the Love in the school’s cafeteria to fund cancer research on March 15.
CSF raised over $272 and collected more than 123 inches of hair, all of which will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the Pantene Program. The hair will be used to make wigs for cancer patients.
“I got a haircut and I feel great. I think this event is a great cause to support and I encourage people to donate,” Toby Vanderveer (’13) said.
The event was sponsored by Hallmark, Mangiamo Gelato Caffe, Dtntech Marketing Solutions, and The Ivy Salon and Spa. The Ivy Salon and Spa sent four hairstylists to the event.
CSF had initially intended to collaborate with the hair stylists from the Style Lounge, but unfortunately the salon was unable to contribute due to technical issues.
“S(hair) the Love is an event our club had planned since the summer of 2012,” said Kristine Tran (’13), co- president of CSF. “We had secured the event with the Style Lounge, who was willing to make a big sacrifice and contribution in participating.”
However, Style Lounge ended up withdrawing two days before the event on Wednesday.
“They most likely had a date mix up or did not have the staff available to meet the date,” said club adviser Mr. Walters. “Still, the salon was very supportive and offered to reschedule the event in May.”
After the Style Lounge’s withdrawal the board members scrambled to find a replacement salon. Fortunately, the Ivy Salon and Spa agreed to participate with only two days’ notice, saving the event.
Vicky Miller, Michelle Nguyen, Lasmine Lieu, Korynne Kuiland, Kimmy Peterman, Heaven Bui, Linda Huynh, Kristine Tran, and Elise Dang made hair donations of 8 inches or more.
Those who contributed by getting a haircut include Christy Huynh, Lindsay Danley, Toby Vanderveer, Katie Miller, Sang Doan, Jessica Le, VanAnh Nguyen, Dorothy Nguyen, Mimi Chen, Nick Nguyen, Ann Le, Bruce Panaccione, Jonolie, Jaiden Ford, and Andrew Ninh.
Lindsay Danley (’14) made a monetary donation and also got a trim.
“I feel good,” Danley said. “I got a nice haircut and I also got to donate to the American Cancer Society. The Ivy Salon and Spa does a great job, and I also think that CSF should do this event again next year.”
