Good morning Barons, here are your morning announcements for Monday, April 22nd:
Last Tuesday afternoon was a major day for our girls swim team, they beat the Edison Chargers for the first time since 1997. It was an uphill battle from the first to last relay. Jenn Schulman and Melissa Cruz swam neck to neck with their opponents keeping the score tight, followed by Katelyn Farrow and Anna Ransom in the 200 I.M., Jaime Dang steps in winning back to back events, Sonia Djafri worked tirelessly through her 20-lap race, Jordan Stead and Natalie Grohmann kept the score close during the Backstroke, and Freshman Lauren Wong crushed Edison’s chances of walking away with an easy win by placing 2nd instead of 4th in the 100 Breaststroke. The score was tied going into the last event, Makenna DuBois and Sarah Yao (two of our team captains) were staged behind the blocks, each looking cool as a cucumber, as the Edison girls nervously paced around the blocks, Sarah hops up waiting for the officials whistle, the beep sounds, and Sarah gives the relay the lead it needed to win the race and the meet.
Over the weekend the boys and girls track teams competed at the Orange County Championships. The girls frosh/soph team dominated the competition winning their second consecutive Orange County title. The following girls were county champions in their individual events… Natalie Huynh, Crystal Eckman 100 meters. Amanda Torchia was second in the triple jump. Heather Cottle was fantastic anchoring the 4×400 relay to complete the victory. In the varsity division Alyssa Tao finished second in the 100 meters and broke the school record in the 200 meters running 25.25 seconds.
The boys frosh/soph team was equally impressive finishing 3rd in the county. Nick Malone finished second in the 100 meters and was county champion in the 200 meters. Dakarai Barnett jumped over 20 feet finishing second in the long jump. Elias Ghazlani was terrific in the 400 meters running 52 seconds. In the varsity division Hunter Gulino broke the school record in the mile running 4:16. His teammate David Abraham ran 4:22 in the mile which is top ten all time. Great job.
Varsity baseball completed the sweep of Newport Harbor by the score of 8-5. Brock Lundquist had three hits which included his 5th homerun of the year. John Shattles hit his 2nd homerun of the year that pushed the Barons lead to 8-5.
