Senators support the school

During Bell Week, Senate members stay long after school to make posters.

Senate is an active FVHS organization that is involved in almost all parts of student life.  As a close-knit group, members support organizations and activities throughout the school year.  They play an integral part of Bell Week and demonstrate school spirit as a group cheering at various sporting events.

Jessica Hanson, the ASB member who oversees Senate, said, “Senate is like the mini-ASB. It is a group of students that want to get involved with their school. It is like a family.”

Senate began many years before Hanson started attending FVHS and is spelled out in the Fountain Valley High School constitution.

The application is a simple form that asks about the strengths and weaknesses of the applicant. The application is then reviewed by the ASB members chosen to help with the process. Each applicant is interviewed so ASB can see what each student is like and whether his or her personality will mesh with the Senate culture. There were 160 applications this year, a huge jump from the usual 50 to 100.

“People join because they want to be involved and have fun. For underclassmen, it gives a feel of how ASB works,” Hanson said.

Senate offers a way for students to change the problems they see in school, become a part of the FVHS community, and help with events and activities.
