Varsity swimmers Cory Nguyen (’13) and Jennifer Schulman (’13) have achieved much playing for the boys and girls swim team for the past four years, and will graduate from FVHS with a long list of accomplishments.
“Swimming is really fun but it’s challenging here because of the early morning practices but I feel like they’re making me swim a lot better,” said Nguyen. “Swimming relieves me from my school work stress and all that homework that is loaded on me.”
As a child, Nguyen both swam and participated in gymnastics. “Gymnastics really helped me build this kind of competitiveness that I personally think I would’ve never gotten if I had not done gymnastics,” he stated.
Schulman began swimming competitively at age four on a summer league team. “My parents got me into swimming, they just thought it was important that I knew how to swim,” she said. “It just seemed like a natural choice.”
Now as seniors, both Nguyen and Schulman are proud to be on the varsity team. Nguyen has lettered all years that he has swum at FVHS and broke his own personal record with the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.80, and Schulman and her fellow swimmers recently defeated Edison for the first time in 16 years.
Nguyen plans to attend OCC, where he will continue swimming. Schulman will attend UC Santa Barbara. “I did not sign an intent to swim there because the school is a division 1 school and I rather do the triathlon team than the swim team,” she said.
“Fountain Valley Swim gave me a sense of teamwork,” said Schulman. “We’re always really pumped up for our meets and we always cheer for each other and support each other, it’s a really good atmosphere to be a part of.”
