While most juniors are busy agonizing over the number of points they missed on an SAT practice test, or stressing over the looming task of filling out college applications, one Baron has her sights set on the big picture. Astrid Ulloa (’14) is a Jane-of-all-trades, master of everything.

At age 17, Ulloa has the merits of a businesswoman twice her age.  From designing and making her own jewelry, managing an Etsy shop, baking cupcakes with her mother, or crafting gum-paste flowers, Ulloa knows what it takes to make a business endeavor successful. Over 3,000 customers have requested her brand of crafty-goodness.

For Ulloa, the seeds of business savvy were first sewn first by her mother. Ulloa recounts her mother’s homemade cakes back when they lived in Peru. When Ulloa was in middle school, she began working side by side with her mother and started selling cupcakes to her teachers.

While most would cower at the thought of managing multiple AP courses, participating in extracurricular activities, and running a business, Ulloa said, “It’s a good stress reliever.”

Like most juniors, Ulloa is still unsure about what the future holds.  However, it is inevitable that she will pursue her business sense beyond high school.
