Supervision has passed a new policy that allows students to use their electronic devices during passing periods.
This policy was passed in hopes of decreasing the amount of students using their cell phones in their classes. Some students only need to quickly check their phones, and by allowing students to do that during passing periods, they will not disrupt the teacher and other students when class starts.
“We encourage academic and necessary cell phone use and not distracting, teasing, bullying or inappropriate cell phone use,” said Principal Chris Herzfeld. “Students can access deeper learning, more student engagement and mimic the real-world problem-solving environment that will define your work world.”
Students no longer have to sneak a glance at their electronic devices when they think no one is watching.
Katie Miller (’14) said, “Now people don’t have to worry about Supervision taking their electronics away.”
However, some believe this new policy will have no impact on them.
“This policy has no effect on me because I always leave my phone at home,” Brian Nguyen (’15) said. “Even if I bring it to school, I don’t use it during school time.”
Danny Diep (’14) believes students will continue to use their cell phones in class. “Passing period is only a short amount of time and I don’t want to use my phone and have to put it away when I’m in the middle of checking something because the bell rang. I think students will still sneak and continue to use their cellphones anyway.”
This policy was passed to encourage students to use their electronic devices during the appropriate times. “As educators, it is now even more important for us to teach proper cell phone etiquette and citizenship,” Herzfeld said.
