Boys water polo won their first home game against Capo Valley at OVHS, with a concrete score of 11-7 on Tuesday.
The boys kicked off the game with the first point scored by Dalton Kenefick (‘14). Although the Barons were down 3-4 at the end of the first quarter, they were able to make an impressive comeback by the end of the second quarter and held the lead for the rest of the game.
The boys defeated Capistrano Valley for the first time in three years, showing promising potential and an impressive start to the season. Dalton Kenefcik (‘14), Connor Reilly (‘14), Kyle Reilly (‘16), Jacob LeBaron (‘14), and Ben Schmiesing (‘17) made goals throughout the game. Goalie Chad Halsted (‘14) upheld a strong defense and blocked shot after shot.
“The whole team is doing a lot better than I expected us to do,” said Adam Mancini (’17).
“Right now the team is looking pretty good,” said co-captain Kenefick. “We can always keep improving.”
“The sky’s the limit,” added co-caption Reilly.
This year, coach Eric Perales accepted fifteen boys on the varsity team, instead of the usual ten or twelve. The hardest part of the job, according to him, is “managing everyone’s playing time.”
Perales’s goal this year is to try to make the playoffs. “The bare minimum is make the second round of the playoffs,” he said.
The next home game will begin at 3 p.m. at OVHS against Notre Dame next Tuesday.
