FVHS has welcomed Joseph Barro as a new English teacher.
Although he is new to Fountain Valley High School, Barro has been a part of HBUHSD for a couple years as an adult school teacher and resident substitute. This year will be his first official year teaching English, a subject that he loves.
“I decided to teach English because I have a passion for literature and writing,” he said. “I also believe that it’s important for students and people in our community in general to have appreciation for literature an arts.”
Barro not only has a love for English, he also enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge with his students. He is very enthusiastic about learning and feels that the most important thing in life is to “learn to appreciate learning”.
“I started teaching in general because I love working with kids and I hope to inspire the next generation of people coming into our community,” said Barro. “My favorite part about teaching is probably inspiring kids with knowledge.”
When he is not teaching, he likes to surf, play music, and watch baseball games, especially Dodgers games, with his sons. He also likes writing and reading; his favorite piece of literature is One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.
Barro has two of his family members at FVHS: his wife, Emily Barro, who is a biology teacher, and one of their sons who is a student. Although he and his family are working in the same place, he does not feel that their relationship and proximity will change or affect their lives at FVHS.
“I don’t see them much,” he said. “I see them around occasionally, but our paths rarely cross.”
Barro is very excited for the upcoming year, and looks forward to interacting with his students and fellow teachers.
“I love [FVHS]; it’s great. I love my classes, I love my students and the faculty has been fantastic in treating me well and I think it’ll be a great year.”
