Boys water polo ended the season, losing 10-15 against Los Alamitos, last Wednesday night. The Barons battled it out at Newport Harbor, starting off the first quarter strong with a score of 5-5.
“Los Al has always been a top ten team, so we knew it was going to be tough,” said Calvin Nguyen (‘14). “In first quarter, we answered every single goal they had.”
Despite the loss, head coach Eric Perales said the last game was one of the best he had seen his team play all season. Co-captain Dalton Kenefick (‘14) was also proud of the team and the season.
“Overall this season we had our ups and downs,” said Kenefick (‘14). “But we played really well. It was a great growing season.”
The boys have come a long way from when they first started the season. Perales stated that there was no one player who improved more than any of the others, because they all worked hard and improved each and every day.
The Barons fought until the end and were able to score five more points by the end of the game.
Perales hopes to make it to the second round of the CIF finals. At this point, it is unclear if the water polo team has made it into the CIF league. So far the team has an overall score of 19-8 and a league score of 1-4, placing fifth in league.
“The top four [teams] in our league are ranked in the top ten in the county,” said Perales. “We have the strongest league in America, so it’s hard to win in this league.”
According to Perales, whether or not boys water polo has made it into the CIF league will be determined some time by the end of the week. For now, players and coaches are hoping to make it into CIF.
“We still have a chance, so we’re going to keep fighting, hoping that we make it,” said Jake Shaylor (‘14).
