After all the training the boys cross-country team had performed over the summer, from three-mile tempos at Villa Park to exhausting track workouts, the season had finally narrowed down to one of the most highly-anticipated races of the year: the CIF Finals at Mount Sac Antonio College last Saturday morning.

Against a competitive field with some of the most highly recognized teams in the nation, the Barons had hopes of securing a spot among the top seven teams in order to become the first Fountain Valley boys cross-country team to qualify for state.

However, although the boys had achieved an FVHS record team time of 77:48 on the course, and were led by Robert Osorio (’15) who ran a time of 15:02 and placed eighth overall, making him the first FVHS individual in history to move on to state, the boys were only four points short from being able to qualify as a team, placing eighth out of sixteen teams.

“It’s bittersweet,” Coach J.D Krawyzk reported. The Barons were able to run a record time, yet fell short of their main goal.

Nonetheless, the boys are optimistic for next year, said Osorio. “We gave it all our effort, but it wasn’t enough. Next year, we’ll make it for sure though.”

“Running all four years of cross-country has taught me that it’s not the time that defines a runner, but their heart,” said Hunter Gulino (’14). “I couldn’t be more proud of my teammates for their determination and love for the sport.”
