After a thrilling victory over Los Al in the first league game, girls varsity soccer continued their winning streak with a stunning 3-1 victory over the Huntington Beach Oilers last Tuesday.

Although having the advantage of playing on their home field, the Lady Barons entered the game cautiously. Led by junior captain Valerie Holler (’15), Barons took control of the midfield while the defense also showed discipline and great organization. While Huntington Beach struggled to find a way through, Fountain Valley snatched the first chances in the match and Kasey Reeve (’15) turned it into a goal.

After conceding an early goal, the Oilers pushed up, hoping to equalize the score. The Barons defensive line held strong, with Sutton Edwards (’14) and Ryann Callaghan (’15) stopping anything that came through the middle along with many outstanding saves from goalkeeper Alison Marlow (’14). The first half ended with a great advantage for the Barons.

The second half started with great pressure from Huntington Beach, however, the Barons’ defense displayed good connection and communication. Chances came in a corner kick when Kiana Dinsmore (’15) made a wonderful pass inside the box and Reeve scored her second goal of the game. The Oilers lost determination and in a counter attack, Hannah Daye (’15) grabbed the third goal for Fountain Valley with a beautiful chip shot.

With 10 minutes left in the game, the Oilers hoped for a miracle. Their efforts paid off with a goal after a moment of carelessness from the Barons. However, the time was not enough for them to make a comeback. The game ended with the final score of 3-1.

Girls soccer’s next home game is against Marina next Monday.
