Fountain Valley adds another loss to their 0-5 league standing on Wednesday, Jan. 29th.
The first quarter looked optimistic for the Barons, as Jordan Venters (’14) and Christopher Meyers (’15) sunk a three-point shot and a layup in the first minute of the game. Cory Bitzer (’14) came charging out of the gates with 8 points in the first quarter, dropping two three-pointers into the basket mid-quarter. Other players followed suit, as Calvin Le (’16) put up 3 points of his own from outside on the scoreboard at the end of the first. Turnovers by Fountain Valley were nearly compensated by great rebounds, both defensively and offensively, and the quarter ended with a score of 16-17.
Bitzer continued with hot hands from outside the arc through the first half and third quarter. The Barons held much luck from three-point range, with Venters gaining another 3 points mid-quarter, and a tight margin, by following through on layups, thanks to Meyers. Edison continued to lead the scoreboard with 41-36 at the end of the first half.
Fountain Valley’s momentum started to pick up four minutes into the third quarter when Bitzer scored three, three-point shots back-to-back in only a minute. His four-point play afterwards, finally closed the gap, 50-50. Bitzer’s successful run signaled the Chargers to tighten up their defense, which didn’t allow for any other points by the Barons in the third. Edison quickly regained and expanded their lead to a score of 50-60 at the end of the third quarter.
Meyers was able to convert two more layups into points in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter before the Barons stagnated. Both teams loosened their defenses, and pace of the game slowed as it closed with free throws. Edison took home the victory on Wednesday with a final score of 56-75. Bitzer scored 23 points in total, Venters, 14, and Meyers, 12.
The Barons will try their luck against Los Alamitos on Friday, Jan. 31st.
