With the theme of High School Musical, the tenth annual FNL talent show promised nothing less than the best and drew many parents, students, and faculty to the gym last Friday night.
This year’s talent show was held at the end of February, two months earlier than its usual time period due to complications in scheduling. However, this change of time did not affect the show’s overall production. With a rehearsal taking place the previous Wednesday, the performers were ready to captivate the audience with their talents.
The judges were FVHS alumnus and former FNL host Deeder Lam, and Miss Fountain Valley Aimee Le, both of whom had served as judges at last year’s show.
“I’m expecting a lot of talents and I’m also expecting to be blown away again because I know that this school has so many talented students,” said Le. “I am so excited to watch the show tonight.”
The show featured 16 acts with Bailey Johnson (’14) and Daelyn Daniloff (’15) as the hosts. Performances included original music, improvisational comedy, poetry, and more.
“The show is really nice and the acts are very fun to watch. All the contents here are just really inspiring to see and I’m glad I’m here tonight,” said Brian Nguyen (’17)
Sianna Macy (’14) performed her original song “I’m Short” and was named top act of the night, while Bianca Singer (’14) came in second place with her cover of “Love the Way You Lie” and dance group 714 FV Smooth Sassy Boys completed the top three. Honorable mentions went to Matt Iida (’15) for his original rap, as well as Abe Nguyen (’15), Steven Truong (’14) and Alan Nguyen (’14) for their cover of “She Was Mine” by AJ Rafael.
“It was a lot of fun singing my song in the talent show,” said Macy. “The crowd’s energy was awesome and I’m just really glad that I got to make some people laugh and be a part of this great night.”
As part of its goal to bringing awareness to drunk driving and the use of drugs and abusive substances, Friday Night Live also asked students to sign Casey’s Pledge, encouraging students to live a healthy lifestyle by staying alcohol- and drug-free. A video was also shown at the end of the night to help spread FNL’s message.
The tenth annual talent show ended with many praises for both the performers as well as the hosting club. Students and parents enjoyed watching the acts while performers were encouraged by the enthusiasm from the audience.
“I think this year talent show is one of the best we’ve had,” said FNL co-president Rachel Phillips (’14). “We had a great variety of performers who really performed at their best and I think we really showed what we have.”
