FVHS held an exclusive event in the gym called, “The Realities of College Recruiting,” by former college coach Jack Renkens on March 3.
A native of Scottsdale, Arizona, Renkens has spent 18 years traveling around the country spreading vital information about the truth behind college recruitment of sports.
“I go around the country and I tell people this is a business; this is the way it works,” said Renkens, “I’ve sat in thousands of living rooms offering scholarships to athletes.”
“The Realities of College Recruiting” was planned by athletic director Steve Eggert. Eggert organized the event for athletes who attend FVHS. He believes that every athlete in FVHS should know the realities of college recruitment.
“Without question, I believe that the students that attended learned more than they ever learned about playing sports in college, but also about attending college,” said Eggert. “Without a doubt, those who did not attend, missed out tremendously.”
Student athletes and parents who attended the event were satisfied with what they learned about college recruitment. “I thought college recruiting would be a lot more harder, like you had to stand out in order to be recruited,” said Lina Thatsanaphonh (‘15), “but now it actually seems easier when Mr. Renkens explained all this.”
“We learned a lot of useful stuff, and it will definitely help me to get into college,” said Jacob Shubin (‘15), “and this also shows that a lot of other colleges is good for sports.”
