Last Thursday, the Fountain Valley track team competed in a tri-meet against Edison and Huntington Beach high schools at the FV track, and swept on all levels. Boys varsity won their division with a score of 82 -49 against Edison and 1117 -12 against Huntington Beach, and the varsity girls team won 91-41 against Edison and 114-17 against Huntington Beach. The Barons dominated in all events, and there were numerous top performances and PR’s achieved.
On the distance side, Amber Bragdon (’14) once again won the girls varsity race in the 1600 meters, running a time of 5:08.09, and David Abraham (’14) won the boys race with a time of 4:30.85, with Hunter Gulino (’14) right behind him running a 4:33.15.
“The boys did good overall, we had a lot of guys score and it was more about winning Edison for another Sunset League title in a row,” reported Coach JD Krawczyk of the boys distance team. “The 1600 went out at a pretty pedestrian pace and a pretty big last quarter mile. They went out in 2:26 [for the first 800m] and I believe that it was a 2:05 for their last 800m. It was a 58 [seconds] last lap for David.”
The sprinters and hurdlers performed especially strong in their events, with Heather Cottle (’15) running another time of 46.74 for second place in the girls varsity race in the 300m hurdles. Patrick Huynh (’14) received first place overall in the boys varsity 100m dash with a time of 11.17 seconds, and Annelise Doerr (’15) ran a 59.08 to get first place in the varsity girls 400m.
One of the stand-out performances of the day was achieved by the girls varsity 4x100m relay team, who broke fifty seconds to run a time of 49.77, giving them an easy victory over the other teams.
“So the 4×100 went really well today, I believe that we had great hand offs and I think that everyone ran fast and strong and did their best,” stated Lauren Delgadillo (’14), one of the varsity team members.
The Barons are looking forward to the Palos Verdes Invitational on Saturday, when a few will compete at the esteemed Arcadia Invitational, against some of the greatest teams and athletes across the nation. The track team then plans to sweep again on all levels at the next dual meet against Marina high school, and once again become the Sunset League Champions.
“I think that so far I’m doing well and our team is doing awesome this year,” said William Hua (’14), who ran in the boys varsity 1600 and 800m races. “We have a good chance to win league.”
