33 students from Fountain Valley’s KIWIN’S went to San Ramon to attend the 38th annual District Convention, also known as DCON, from April 4-6.
KIWIN’S is a community service club that promotes leadership and service while raising funds for pediatric trauma program, or PTP, through fundraisers like car washes and shoe drives.
KIWIN’S received 19 out of 30 total awards, including second place in Distinguished Secretary and first place in Service in the Platinum Division. The members were also able to secure the spirit stick, a symbol of their spirit and sportsmanship.
“At DCON, there are many things that happen [such as] various awards that KIWIN’S clubs are able to achieve,” said KIWIN’S president Calvin Chau (‘15). “Fountain Valley KIWIN’S is one of the strongest clubs not only within the division, but in the district.”
At DCON, many schools from Southern and Northern California attended in order to learn leadership skills, attend general sessions and elect the upcoming executive district board. In addition, DCON is a convention where members are able to socialize and meet other people from across California as well as take part in educational workshops to improve their involvement with KIWIN’S.
“I decided to go because I went last year for the first time and I had an amazing time,” said Thomas Huynh (’15). “I gained a lot of knowledge bonding with friends and made many new ones.”
Although the bus ride to San Ramon took about seven hours, members were content with the overall experience.
“Personally, DCON was one of the best experiences of my life,” said Chau. “The many memories that I was able to make with other KIWIN’S members from my home club and division as well as those from all around California was just unforgettable.”
