The annual PTSA Award Night, where selected students were honored for their effort, was held in the cafeteria last Wednesday.
PTSA awards are given by the Parent-Teacher-Student Association to recognize students’ outward kindness, optimism, and positive attitude. Because each teacher gets to nominate a student, it is less competitive than other awards and every student has equal opportunities of being recognized.
The award night was hosted by seniors Jeremy Flores and Shelby Sato. Flores serves as the student representative for the PTSA in the 2013-2014 while Sato will take up Flores’ position in the 2014-2015 school year.
The night began with the award for the PTSA Art Reflection contest winners. Michelle Wickstrom (’14) and Amanda Gaf (’14) received recognition in the Visual Art category while Christine Nguyen (’15) and Tyler Kohanek (’15) were honored in the Literature category.
With 10 different departments at FVHS, over 70 students were honored for their good citizenship in and outside of classrooms by their teachers.
Stephanie Medina (’15), who was nominated for the Mathematics award by math teacher Leslie Murray, said, “It feels really good to receive an award for recognition on the effort I’ve been putting into the class the whole year and all my hard work is slowly paying off.”
The award ceremony ended with a standing ovation from parents, teachers and staff. “Receiving the attention, goodies, feed backs, and the award itself was a pretty great feeling of accomplishment,” said Tina Doan (’15), “The PTSA award tonight was a great way for teachers to show their recognition and appreciation for their student’s work.”
