On Tuesday, April 22, the Lady Barons won an impressive match over the Newport Harbor Sailors. The match ended with the mercy rule, which allows the leading team to automatically gain a victory, if ahead by at least 10 points with the other team having no points by the 3rd inning. The final score was 11-0 at the top of the 5th inning, with the Sailors unable to score.
“Our team executed and played to our full potential,” said captain Tori Ellard (‘14).
The game’s overall mood changed completely during the 2nd inning while the Lady Barons were up, 1-0. With a total of seven hits, the Lady Barons managed to send the score to a skyrocketing 7-0 by the end of the 2nd inning.
The Lady Barons ended the game during the 5th inning where the mercy rule had to come into play. By earning two walks and a hit during the 4th inning, and two hits and a walk in the 5th inning, the score finally ended with 11-0. And since the Sailors were down by more than 10 points with no score on their side at all, and passed the 3rd inning, they were forced to yield to defeat to the Lady Barons.
Key defensive player was the pitcher, Madison Weathers (‘14) with a total of 9 strikeouts, and key offensive player was Megan Craft (‘16), with earning a hit in 4 out of 5 innings, earning a single, 2 doubles, and a triple, granting herself with a total of 4 hits.
