Last Thursday, the track team battled against Marina High School and won on almost all levels, with girls varsity winning their division in an overall score of 121-15, boys varsity won 97-23, girls junior varsity scored 110-26, boys junior varsity won 118-18, girls frosh soph crushed their opponents in a 119-8 victory, and the boys frosh soph team was barely edged out by Marina in a close score of 67-69.
Top performances came from pole vaulting, with the girls teams sweeping on all levels and varsity athlete Erica Davis (’14) vaulting over a height of ten feet.
“Pole vault went really well today, we swept on the girls varsity side, me, Alicia Arnett (’14), and Courtney Causer (’14), we all got first, second, and third,” reported Davis. “Overall, the team did really well today and we pretty much had people score in every single event, which is good. At the end of the year, I feel like Annelise [Doerr] (’15) and Heather [Cottle] (’14) are really going to do well and I feel like Lindsey Chiang (’14) and Lauren Delgadillo (’14) are going to jump super far, and so I see us doing very well this year.”
Other top performances included those from distance side, where Amber Bragdon (’14) won her heat in the varsity girls mile with an unofficial time of 5:10.
“The girls did really fairly well today, we went out pretty easy in the mile but we finished strong,” recounted Bragdon. “Natalie Grohman (’15) PR’d, which is really great and we just kind of focused on placing today and we ended up winning the meet.”
Satisfied with their results, the Barons are optimistic for the future, and are looking to finishing strong as the season comes to an end, and hopefully as Sunset League champions.
” I think and [we’re] four years in a row Sunset League champs,” said Ramsey Husain (’14), who competed in the boys varsity triple jump, high jump, 110m hurdles, and 300m hurdles “Pretty stoked on that and you know, we’re going to be looking forward to be doing many years of Sunset League champions also, five years, six years, seven years, who knows what’s going to happen!”
“I feel like we’re a very confident team and I feel like we’ve been doing really great all season,” stated Julienne Chiang (’16), who competed in the girls frosh soph 110m hurdles, long jump, and triple jump. “I feel like we have a great mindset and a great group of athletes, so we’ve got our hopes high, we’ll leave the rest up to our talent I guess.”
Next week, the track team will compete at Huntington Beach high school where they will be hosting the Sunset League Prelims, and will then move on to Finals, where they hope to sweep on all levels and move on to CIF.
“The FVHS track team battled and beat Marina,” said Coach Talpash. “Now it’s on to league finals the next two weeks.”
