FVHS Make-A-Wish participated in the the Walk for Wishes event at the OC Great Park to fundraise money to help grant a child’s wish on April 26.
Walk for Wishes is a two-mile walk that features a world of wishes. The walk is designed to raise money for children with life-threatening diseases in a positive way.
Make -A-Wish clubs from all over Orange County were invited to support the walkers. However, FVHS Make-A-Wish is the only club that actually participated in the walking part of the event, thus becoming the first club to do so. In previous Walk for Wishes events, FVHS Make-A-Wish had participated by cheering on the walkers.
“[Walking in the event] was a great way for members to truly understand the foundation’s cause and the positive environment made members feel good about supporting and helping the [Make-A-Wish] foundation,” said Make-a-Wish secretary Leandra Doan (‘16).
Last year, MAW granted Samya, a FVHS student, her wish of going to Paris before she passed away. They wanted to walk in this event to honor and remember her.
“Make-A-Wish wanted to participate in order to commemorate our wish kid Samya, who passed away last year.” said treasurer Dominic Cao (‘16) “We just wanted to dedicate this walk for her and acknowledge how much we miss her.”
Since this was the first time FVHS walked in an event like this, members were able to experience the walk from a different point of view.
“Since most of us never actually had the opportunity to walk in one, doing it as a club and seeing the other clubs cheer definitely gave me a different point of view. It made me realize how much more [excited] the other walkers became [as they are cheered on],” said co-historian Bree Lee (‘16).
At the walk, the members of FVHS Make-A-Wish were able to raise $1585 by asking friends and family for donations. These profits will go toward the granting of future wishes.
