Last Friday, Fountain Valley High School staff and students gathered to celebrate Chris Herzfeld’s 14 years of service as principal with a farewell pep rally.
After second period, students and teachers filled the bowl to honor Herzfeld and his time at the school. Marching band, cheerleaders and students cheered for Herzfeld throughout the assembly.
The rally began with a speech on the behalf of the student body by ASB President, Janelle Dinsmore (’15). Intermin Principal, Kirk Kennedy, then presented an FVHS plaque, as well as a speech, for Herzfeld.
FVHS Choir Director, Kevin Tison, then took the stage with a story about a moment he shared with Herzfeld. Two years ago, Tison was walking in the bowl when Herzfeld gave him a dollar and asked him to recompose the school’s Alma Mater. After all this time, Tison believes he finally earned the dollar. When he finished the story, he gave Herzfeld a framed score of the song and the troubadours assembled on stage to sing the new Alma Mater.
“Singing the Alma Mater was a very special moment for me, an experience I will never forget,” said Zury Ramirez (’15).
The Baron Bridge Builders also presented Herzfeld with a yearbook full of signatures that third period classrooms across campus signed during the week.
The assembly concluded with a speech from Herzfeld himself and a “selfie” including all of the staff and students.
“I was feeling incredibly fortunate. [I had] lots of mixed emotions,” said Herzfeld. “[I’m] sad to be leaving all of this behind, happy to have had the chance to be a part of something awesome [and] sad that not everybody in education gets to have a moment like that, happy, humble and grateful that I did get that experience.”
