Fountain Valley Girl Basketball (2-0 in league) won 70-55 against the Edison Chargers for the first time in 20 years in their home gymnasium last Tuesday.
This was an emotional game for many of the players, including Michelle Wu (‘15), wing.
“I thought we did amazing. We stayed together as a team. We save some posts. We pushed some pressure,” Wu said. “We did everything on the field.”
The Barons started out with a strong lead since the first quarter and never let go. Andie Kristinat (‘17), guard, ignited momentum with her 5 three-pointers in the first quarter, ending it 28-18.
“My threes,” Kristinat said, “It’s what I usually do.”
Second half ended with 48-32, extending the double-digits leads even further, with Mikaila Pacis (‘16) getting many key rebounds as well as Cassie Gonzalez (‘17) and Ari Jacobson scoring over 7 points by the end of the first half.
“We did everything that we needed to do. We rebounded the ball; we defended. We took advantage of the mismatch, and we shot the ball well,” Coach Cory Clarke said.
Ending the game at 70-55, Wu, Kristinat, Gonzalez and Jacobsen all scored in double digits.
They are now tied for first with Los Alamitos Griffins, who is also 2-0 in league. This Friday will be a critical game for the the two leaders in the Sunset League.
“Los Al is tough. Anytime you played on the road, it’s tough. They got one of the best players in the league if not the best player in the league,” Coach Clarke said.
However, the team, who is 15-3 overall, remained positive.
“I think we can beat them,” Wu said.
