The girls basketball team ended with a defeat in the second playoff round against Windward High School, finishing the final game of the season at 38-81.
The Fountain Valley girls basketball team played exceptionally well this season, considering the girls qualified for CIF by petition, and not by default. They are ranked 16th in Division 1AA and played against Schurr High School in their first round of playoffs. It was a close game, going into overtime after tying at 62. The Lady Barons came out on top at the end, beating Schurr .
After winning a close game, the team had to play against the number one seeded team in their division, Windward High School, with a 15-9 record.
“They were good, too good for us,” Coach Cory Clarke said. “We enjoyed playing against them.”
Starting out the first quarter, the Lady Barons struggled to contain the Wildcats, who had an early 10-2 run. Due to difference in height between players, Wildcats was able to attack the paint and score from the post more easily. Yet the Lady Barons did not give up. Michelle Wu scored 7 consecutive points of her total 11 points during the first half. The first half ended at 20-45.
“Overall, I think we did our best,” wing Ashley Masuda (’15) said. “We really tried to make a game because everyone came out and supported us.”
For the second half, Adrienne Dang (’18) led the second units. At the end, the seniors came out to finish the match. The game ended with a 38-81 score.
The girls basketball team still had one of their best seasons ever this past year.
The team also has a bright future. Half of the team’s rosters is filled with sophomores and juniors, including 3 point specialist Andie Kristinat (’18).
“We won against who we haven’t won against in a long time,” Coach Clarke said.
