Over Spring Break, the Fountain Valley teaching staff spent the week-long vacation with various activities to keep them busy.
English teacher and Web Design supervisor Sean Ziebarth utilized his free time with the campus-run video journalism class, the Baron Broadcast News, in a competition in San Diego, where they participated and won a regional prize in the Student Television Network Awards.
“I spent the beginning of Spring Break in San Diego with the BBN class, where we received the Broadcast Excellence Award for the western region,” said Ziebarth.
Chemistry and Advanced Placement Environmental Science teacher Lisa Battig also spent her vacation in southern California by completing taxes, accompanying AP Environmental Science students to Catalina Island for their spring research project and finishing her own study. She wrote a thesis on the correlations between sanitation practices and susceptibility to diseases titled “Sanitation and Hygiene Education and the Connection to Water-borne Diseases,” which involved data recorded anonymously by students who filled out a list of questions regarding their sanitation practices after going to the bathroom.
English teacher Rachel Woods enjoyed the leisure time by remediating from the hectic environment of the school year.
“I didn’t really do much,” said Woods. “[I] took the kids to school everyday…but just spent time with them and rested.”
Spanish teacher Holly Vivar, like Woods, used the time to relax and watch a few movies.
“Over spring break I watched a lot of Netflix, I hung out at home kind of relaxed, did some yoga classes to relieve all my school year stress and played with the cats and went and watched ‘Big Hero 6’ and ‘Fast and Furious 7’,” said Vivar. “My husband and I went to go hike Potato Chip Rock in Escondido which was one of the highlights of my spring break.”
After a long haul of correcting assignments and organizing lesson plans, the teaching staff have enjoyed their well-deserved break through relaxation and free activities. Since returning to the classroom last Monday, they plan to prepare their students for the final weeks of the school year, knowing that summer break lies right around the corner.
“Spring Break was just a taste for zen-like quality of summertime,” Ziebarth stated.
