This past Wednesday, fellow FVHS Make-A-Wish club members celebrated World Wish Day for the first time.
“World Wish Day is the 35th anniversary of the first Make-A-Wish wish ever granted and for the club it sets a day where we can reflect back on the effects of a wish and what a wish actually does, and what it takes to actually grant a wish and the types of people needed to grant a wish,” said Make-A-Wish Co-President Kristie Hoang (‘16).
The event took place in Sara LaFramboise’s classroom during lunch, where Make-A-Wish members and the adviser, LaFramboise gathered to participate.
World Wish Week is a countywide celebration hosted by the Make-A-Wish Foundation to commemorate the 35th anniversary of their first wish ever granted.
On April 29, 1980, Make-A-Wish granted their very first wish to 7-year-old Christopher Greicius, fighting leukemia. Make-A-Wish was able to grant his wish of being a police officer, which inspired the community to come together and form the world’s largest wish-granting organization for children with life-threatening illnesses. During the lunch meeting, a remembrance dedicated to Greicius was shown to remind the club what World Wish Week was about. The club had also seen other children and their wishes, and how they were granted.
Make-A-Wish members from all over the nation were encouraged to wear blue and the FVHS club encouraged members to bring a friend along to the Make-A-Wish meeting.
Board members for the 2015 to 2016 term were announced during the event, along with the total amount of money that was raised throughout the entire school year, which came to a total of $5,496.
“Make-A-Wish has helped me meet so many more people and has improved my socializing a lot. It has helped me break out of my comfort shell for many things and try new things in addition to learning how to take more initiative,” said 2015-2016 Secretary Taylor Nguyen (‘18).
Board and club members are extremely proud of what the club on campus and organization as a whole has accomplished.
“I think it’s amazing how we celebrate World Wish Day because we not only celebrate the past wish granters, but we can also raise awareness and funding so we could help future children in need,” said Make-A-Wish member, Danny Cao (‘17).
