The new homecoming venue was announced last Monday, a mere two weeks from the day of the dance.

“I am ecstatic about the venue change,” said Amanda Lee (‘16).

The original homecoming venue was AV Irvine, but because the city of Irvine is behind in doing their inspections and approval for permits, it had to be changed or students would risk not having anywhere to go. Homecoming is now to be held at the Discovery Science Center, which has recently had a renovation. Josh Lamar, Assistant Principal of Activities, said FVHS students will be among the first groups to use the updated venue.

“I’d rather not hold it in our gym,” said Lamar. “I think people want to go off campus, so we chose the best available option for us.”

One of the major concerns students had with this new change is the pricing of the tickets, because the ticket price for the dance remained the same after the venue change. Many students didn’t feel it was worth paying the $75+ for a homecoming ticket because a ticket to the Discovery Science Center on a regular day is $18.

Lamar explained that the prices are staying the same from the original venue because the dance itself still costs the same to put on. They still have to pay for the deejay, lights, entertainment, food and hire supervision and check-in staff, which all stayed the same. The only thing that changed was the venue.

“We’ve been working on [AV Irvine] for a year so we’re as disappointed as anybody else would be, but we’re really excited that we get to switch gears and find somewhere new that we think will be good,” said Lamar. “The important thing is that all the kids are together with the music and able to dance and hang out and be together on a special night; that’s what we really are after. The venue, I think, is less important than the quality of the people there.”
