Fountain Valley’s varsity football team beat the Marina Vikings 49-7 during an in-conference game last week in Westminster.
Quarterback Chad Olberding (’16) threw for one touchdown before he was injured midway through the first quarter- he would not return to the game. Kent Swift (’16) replaced Olberding and threw for two touchdowns and ran for one. Swift also showed off his mobility with a 28-yard run to end the first quarter and a 38-yard run in the second quarter. Swift also had an interception in the third quarter.
Receiver Jake Garrett (’17) caught four passes, two of which resulted in touchdowns. He opened his night with a 37-yard touchdown to put the Barons up 7-0 in the first quarter, and later in the quarter caught his second touchdown of the night to make it 14-0. In the third quarter, Garrett had a 47-yard reception and caught a difficult pass for 36-yards.
Angel Hernandez (’17) caught one touchdown pass with 6:03 left in the second quarter to put the Barons up 28-7. Hernandez had a nice 34-yard catch in the third quarter and he later recovered a Marina fumble and ran it back to end the first half with a score of 42-7.
Kicker Ben Filipek (’16) had a perfect game, while the Barons defense held the Vikings to minimal opportunities to move down the field.
Hernandez was interviewed after the game about his team’s performance.
“We definitely could’ve performed better…we made a couple of mistakes tonight…next week, we need to come out better and play harder and stronger, play together as a team and execute our plays more” he said.
When asked about how the team is going to prepare for next weeks Bell Game, Hernandez said “During practice we’re going to play to the best of our ability every play, we’re going to line up, execute our plays well, and just come back strong next week.”
The Barons are currently in first-place in the Sunset League rankings and play the Edison Chargers on Friday, October 30 in the battle for the bell at LeBard Stadium on the Orange Coast College campus.
