For everyone it’s different, but for me it means spending most of the day sitting in front of the computer either planning something or editing.
We have what is called an editing bay right when you walk in on the left side with two rows of computers that are usually all occupied.
The room is bigger than the average classroom; already giving it an open and free environment. There are posters and projects all around the class giving it its own unique style.
In the very back of the class on the right there is the little box studio where some of the magic happens.
We don’t just throw together videos. We come up with an idea, not just one but two or three. Then we get in front of the class where we pitch, get grilled with questions and then get the okay to start the planner.
Some people storyboard, where you draw every scene out but I mostly just write everything down. The planner isn’t just the script, I write down every detail so when I get on set I know what to do. Pre-production is the key element to a great video.
Now time for production! I always plan for sets to go longer than expected because something always goes wrong and try to make my actors and subjects feel as comfortable as possible in order to get the best result. I have learned that in the moment you change your mind a lot and do spontaneous things
Usually I don’t finish all the filming in one day so planning for multiple days and picking a day that all the actors to show up can get tricky. Finally, once that part is over I can go into post-production! This is my favorite part because after this it is all down hill.
If you mess up in production and forget something you can’t always fix it in post production. And once you get to post production it’s hard to ruin things. For me it is the most fun because you can just play around and experiment. It is the final stage and the final piece to the puzzle.
After when you think you are done; you have the producers check it and either give you the green light or they tell you to make corrections. The thing that most people may not know is most of the time we don’t even know if our video made it into the episode until right before.
The episode airs, we have an episode review where we talk about our package. What we did well and what we could’ve done better. But by this time we are already deep in the next episode because the day after our package (video) is due we have another production meeting.
Yes, BBN can be hard work, repetitive, and tiring. But it also can be fun, creative, and exhilarating. If you want to experience anything or everything that I just talked about then I say apply for BBN because what do you have to lose? But you have everything to gain.
