MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 19th 2016:
Congratulations to Blake Vasquez and Karson Ayres on becoming 2x Five Counties placers this past weekend! Karson placed 8th and beat several of the top ranked wrestlers in the State. Blake beat the #5 wrestler in the State in his semi finals match before eventually losing to the #8 wrestler in the nation in the finals. He is now 29-1 so far this season. Last night Gunner Brisbine competed in the OC All Star Match. He defeated his opponent 4-2 and is now the #1 heavyweight wrestler in the county!
Back to back wins for boys’ basketball with a thrilling overtime win against Marina with Sean Huynh having the game winning shot and a total of 15 points and Jake Bitzer with clutch free throws adding nine points and Spencer Serven also scoring nine points. The next day the boys won by 22 points in the Palm Springs Showcase giving them 15 wins this season. Come out this Friday at 7:00 as they face Edison at home in Berger Gym.
Congratulations to the Varsity Boys’ Soccer team for beating Marina 1-0. David Volkert scored his 9th goal of the season. Slater Kucera earned the shutout. The Barons recorded their 7th shutout of the year. Come out Friday and support the Barons at 3:00 against the Chargers for a first place battle.
Congratulations to the Fountain Valley High School Girls Varsity soccer team for shutting out and defeating the # 2 CIF ranked Edison Chargers with a score of 1-0!
The lady Barons offense, led by senior captain Leigha Williams, opened the match at a high tempo putting the top ranked Charger defense under pressure from the start. It paid off resulting in Williams scoring her 6th goal of the season at the 10th minute mark with a great shot that sailed to the far side of the Edison goal! The FVHS defense took over from then, time and time again stifling the Edison attack and earning their 2nd game in a row Sunset League play shutout. It was tremendous effort from the FVHS defense including goalkeeper Aysia Buendia and defenders Ally Bebout, Karly Duda, Sami Oliver, Sandy Hawryla, Steph Brown and Lauran Perkins. Come on out and support the squad at their first Sunset League home match next Tuesday as they take on the defending Sunset League champs, Huntington Beach High School Oilers!

Congratulations to Anthony Cort who is being honored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation for his performance in court for mock trial. Anthony is one of only two award winners for his performance in the county. Additionally, Aozora Ito won 2nd place in the mock trial courtroom journalism competition and is eligible for the state championships in Sacramento in March. Congratulations Anthony and Aozora!

Congratulations to our boys and girls athletes of the month for December. Chico Cardenas has led the Baron’s Boys Soccer team to a great start in the Sunset League and overall; He currently leads the Barons in goals for the year and has been a great leader both on and off the field. For the girls, 3 year Varsity starter and 2 year Captain of our Surf Team, Giovanna Scandone. She consistently achieves 3rd, 2nd and 1st places in both shortboard and longboard categories against powerhouse schools like Edison and HBHS. She has been a finalist in the Sunset League championships in both shortboard and longboard categories and is a great team leader, role model on campus and an excellent student. Congrats to Chico and Giovanna!!
Congratulations to the Varsity boys soccer team for beating Newport Harbor 3-1. Traevon Davis scored two goals for the Barons. David Volkert scored his 8th goal of the season. The Barons are 2-0 in league! The Boys JV team won 2-1 over Newport to go to 2-0 in league as well. The Frosh Soph team bounced back from a loss with a tie. Great job boys.
Our Varsity wrestlers started off Sunset League with a 63-16 victory over Newport Harbor. The freshmen also won 47-33. Key wins of the night were made by Karson Ayres, Blake Vasquez, Damian Del Rio, and George Sykes. Over the weekend, the varsity competed in the Asics So Cal Challenge. George Sykes and Gunner Brisbine placed 4th. Karson Ayers and Blake Vasquez both won championship belts for winning their divisions.

Boys’ Basketball wins back to back home games defeating El Modena 91-43 on Monday night and on Tuesday giving Segerstrom its worst loss 70-29. Amazing ball movement and tenacious team defense by the Barons proves that a culture of WE, wins, giving them a 13-3 record. Josh Gray continues to shine with 29 points and 11 rebounds combined both games and Adam Trounce with 27 points, 6 assists, and 3 steals combined. Sean Huynh and Jake Bitzer continue to lead the team with their defense and passing. Thank you to the 14 former players that came to the game last night and the baseball team and coaches.

Over the break, our wrestling team competed with 70 teams from 7 different states in the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. Merrick O’Donnell took 4th place and Blake Vasquez won his division with a 45 second pin in the finals! Blake is now 17-0 on the season. The team is currently ranked 7th in Orange county and hope to repeat as 5x Sunset League champions this season. Make sure to come out and support them at their first meet this Wednesday at Newport Harbor.
Boys’ Basketball is now ranked 18th in Orange County and 85th in the State of California after winning the consolation championship last week. Josh Gray had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sean Huynh was named All-Tournament team due to his lock down defense with 9 steals and 9 rebounds. Matt Serven had 18 points and 6 steals. Boys’ basketball is 11-3 overall and have a home game tonight in Berger at 7:00pm. Thank you to the teachers and coaches who came to our games over break.
