In their recent home game, the Lady Barons fought hard but in the end were overpowered by the Oilers.
On Tuesday, the Barons were crushed by the Huntington Beach Oilers with an ultimate score of 13-72. In the first quarter, the Oilers scored several three-pointers, and despite the quick plays by Kayleen Amimoto (‘16) and Ruth Nguyen (‘16), the first quarter ended with a score of 4-28.
Right away into the second quarter, Huntington Beach scored a three and left the Barons on the defensive. Even though aggressive plays came from the Oilers, they had some great interceptions and ended the quarter with 9-45.
In the third quarter the Lady Barons’ effort to step up their game was obvious, but their passes were consistently being intervened by the Oilers. The Lady Barons were only able to score four points, leading to the score to end up at 13-59.
In the last quarter, the Lady Barons struggled hard to keep their spirits high, but even their defense could not stop the Oilers from scoring more shots. Therefore, the game ended with an overall score of 13-72.
“I think we played with our best effort and that’s all we could really give out there. They’re a really good team so we just used our best effort,” Ruth Nguyen (‘16), team captain, said.
For their future games, the girls’ varsity team is working hard to improve their aim and communication as a team more effectively. Nguyen also emphasized the challenge of discipline as a whole.
“We’re shooting a lot of shots; we’re getting a lot of shots up there. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some defense drills in there too,” Nguyen (‘16) said.
